So...back home I was a mercenary. That explains why I know how to use a sword.

But more importantly, my homeland has a tradition of supporting mercenaries. The knights can't be everywhere, so they encourage the formation of mercenary bands to help protect villages and merchants from bandits and pirates. I...don't actually remember any jobs we did yet, but I know that's what we did.

The reason why I'm saying this is because I want to do the same thing here. My sword is for hire should you need it, and I'll take payment in money or in anemoi. I'll even protect people against those blue monsters if you want it.

...Though I need to ask one question of anyone listening. I've seen boards with sheets of paper explaining jobs. How would a person get some of those made?

No. I just wanted signs made for people who missed this.

Oh! Ah, forgive me, I guess I misunderstood. Although I suppose you could always hire people for THAT, if you were so inclined.

That's what I want to do. How would I go about doing that?

I suppose asking around in this fashion is as good a way as any! I must admit I am still figuring out the workings of this place myself, however.

Hmm. Perhaps a month, maybe two? It has been a while. Certainly not as long as some.

That's not much longer than I've been here. It's been almost a month for me.

To be fair, the first couple weeks were... a bit of a blur, for various reasons. Still, yes.

Hmm, work... I should like to find work myself. I seem to have quite a knack for the domestic.

Domestic? So you cook and clean?

Why yes! Nothing fancy, but it certainly gets the job done.

What kind of food do you cook?

Stews, soups. Some fish. Riceballs. Basic Japanese fare, really.

Ah... You do not have a Japan where you come from? It is a country in my world.

Oh. Huh, no, we don't. I only know of six or eight countries.

I see. I suppose I must adjust to this; I cannot imagine you to be the only person to come from a land with completely different geography.

You probably just make up the fliers yourself and go somewhere to get them approved. That way it takes the work out of it for them. 's how they do it on campuses; I can't imagine they'd bother with much more oversight here.

I hope that's not what they'll want me to do here. I've never done anything like that before.

Man, it's not THAT hard. Just throw together somethin' on a computer, print out a couple dozen of... uh... oh. Yeah. I think I'm starting to see where the difficulty lies, here.

...Yeah. The "common knowledge" of my world that I have doesn't include computers. I still don't even know how to use one.

Hey, tell ya what. Gimme your name and some more info on that mercenary service, and I'll put something together. Make some calls, make an ad if I have to, whatever.

In return, you can help me scrounge up some anemoi out there in the field. Enough to send some to the labs so I can remember what the hell my last name is, with some extra to examine. With those big blue bastards running around, I'm going to need some help to get that much. Deal?

But that doesn't mean I can't learn.

That's fine. Part of a mercenary's duties is escorting those who can't wield weapons. I'm sure it won't take me long to get used to escorting again.

Hey, what HAVE you seen of those blue things anyway? What I got from Tsuruya wasn't very specific, other than the fact that they're really freakin' dangerous. What're we up against?

Not enough. I've only gotten glimpses of them through windows. But I've heard the same thing -- really dangerous.
