And THEN things got weird.

[PRIVATE; ANOTHER "DREAM"]

*The pair of them watch the other students from the top of the building through the wire fence. They've started coming up here by themselves a lot more lately.

Takuro speaks first. "Geez, that Takeshi... ditching school again, huh?"

Hiroshi sighs. "It appears so," he replies, shaking his head.

The young, ponytailed redhead spits a bit. "Damnit, we almost got killed because of him, man!" he exclaims, growling. Even now, he still seems a little on edge about everything.

Hiroshi doesn't reply. That is true, he supposes, but it wasn't like he could have known that would happen. And he suspects he's suffering enough right now; the last few times he'd seen him, he hadn't looked too well. Hiroshi suspects he isn't sleeping much.

Takuro, too, doesn't speak for a bit. And then, with a voice a little less certain...

"Hiroshi... you think that thing was really there?"

The white-haired boy blinks, looking over at his friend. It's an unusually subdued tone for him. "Eh?"

"Like, I don't know, maybe it was all just one big bad dream, you know?"

Hiroshi purses his lips, then looks back out over the town. "...that's what I keep hoping..."*

[ACTION; HOME]

*Hiroshi wakes with a start. It's not terror he feels this time, though, but... confusion?*

What... the hell was that?

*He seems slightly ill at ease about something. Which is interesting, because he usually at least PRETENDS to be stoic. Not this time, though.*

Hey, uh... This is sort of a weird question, but has anybody else ever remembered anything that seemed kind of... contradictory? I mean, memories aren't exactly reliable anyway, right? Maybe we remember dreams on accident too. It's a possibility, right?

*What is he going ON about?*

[Gordon picks up the smartphone and peers down into it.]

Hiroshi, what's all this about?

Well it's, um... I mean, it's about... Ugh, I shouldn't have made this call, I know it. But... okay, I guess I can trust you with this. I told you my backstory on the way back from the mansion, right? About me and my friends, and the mansion back home, and... yeah.

Yeah, yeah I remember that... [After a moment's thought, he switches on the private filter to Hiroshi.]

You're not still having those nightmares, are you?

I... well, yes, I guess I am still having nightmares. But this wasn't a nightmare. This was... I don't honestly know what it was. Signs of a nervous breakdown, maybe. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Mr. Gordon, I just remembered all my friends. Alive. AFTER the mansion.

[He halts the sentence and scrubs his hair absentmindedly with one hand, thinking.]

Wow. Yeah. That's about as contradictory as it gets. Look... I hate to say this, but obviously one of those memories has to be false. Now don't get nervous or anything, the other one's probably just a dream. People have dreams all the time that draw from stuff they remember. But which one is the REAL one, I can't tell you.

Ah... You're right, of course. But it was just so vivid, like all of my other memory "dreams..."

*He shakes his head.*

No. I have to be logical about this. There can only have been one course of events I could remember. But... how am I to be able to tell which one is the right one? I know which one I would LIKE to be real, but...

At the moment, you probably can't. No more than I can figure out where I saw those jumping boogers we fought in the ruins before. The best thing you can do is wait. Wait and hold on to what you KNOW is right, until you regain something else that confirms or denies things.

[He smiles.] No problem, kid. Listen... 'f you ever need anyone to talk to, you've always got me and Doctor Van Richden. Don't forget that.

All right. I'm sure this was just a weird anomaly anyway.

I've never had anything contradict itself. Or a memory of a dream, either.

Why?

Just something I dreamt about that doesn't make a lot of sense in context, really. I guess I shouldn't assume everything I dream about is a memory even if it is a vivid dream.

...Do you normally dream if it's not a memory?

Yeah, I mean everybody does. I just don't usually remember them so well when I wake up.

That's so strange. How are you supposed to be able to tell which dreams are real or not?

It's... hard to explain. It's kind of a feeling, really. I know, it's not very scientific, but I just can somehow TELL when it's something bigger than just a dream. If that makes any sense.

But you got that feeling from your recent dream, didn't you?

I DID, but it's completely illogical that I should have done so.

But if you got the same feeling from this one... How do you know this one isn't the real one and the other ones aren't?

Because the other ones are too detailed! It's not like I just remembered that one event, but I also remembered everything after it! It's like I'm remembering two totally different course of events, but that's completely impossible!

*Okay, yeah, he's rattled.*

You're right. Logically, that shouldn't be possible. So why is it happening? Are you getting fake memories somehow?

I don't know. How would you even go about getting fake memories? Aren't Anemoi just supposed to restore what are essentially already in your head? It doesn't make any sense.

That's what I'm wondering, too. But if you're getting memories that don't fit in with the others, that's pretty suspicious, don't you think?

I guess so. But what would anybody stand to gain from giving me fake memories?

I don't know. What does anybody have to gain from bringing us here without our memories in the first place?

But if you're getting fakes... What's to stop any of us from getting false ones, too?

That's what I suspected. I mean, if it IS a memory, it's my own, but that doesn't mean it's a memory of something that actually happened, right?

Um... well, like when you distinctly remember things went one way, but for some reason you get a memory that it went a totally different way. Say... Like you remember you had a huge birthday party at one point, and then you remember something that would have made that party impossible. Stuff like that.

No, I've never remembered anything like that before. I think everything I know so far fits together.

I see... I guess it was a bit much to hope that this happens frequently enough.

Sorry. Maybe you'll remember something that will clear it up someday, though. Like...something made the impossible possible?

You don't sound very happy. Is what's going on bad, or just confusing?

It's... confusing I guess. I was all set to make peace with things that have happened in my past, and this has just sort of complicated it.

Oh, I see. It sounds like that'd be really hard...though I guess if it was something bad, it'd be even worse if you remembered them in the other order. That's kind of scary to think about.
