*Something's been niggling a bit at Ran recently. A memory. She wonders if this is the hole she's been feeling, the missing piece of herself.

She had a shikigami. A servant, although she feels as though she was more than that, in an odd sort of way. She's not sure anybody here would really understand. But ever since she had the memory, she's felt a longing, the urge to fill that missing space. Temporarily, at least. She cannot imagine anything would ever replace the child in her memory.

She passes by the pet store, and pauses.

About an hour later, she emerges, now with a cat and a bunch of cat supplies. Uh oh, she's not gonna become one of THOSE types of women, is she?*

Not too much, but I am certain with a stern but gentle hand she'll be as sweet a child as any.

Come now, I wouldn't be who I am now if I could be so easily tricked by an animal that hasn't even grown her second tail. I'm certain it will be fine.

Why yes, I did! Her name is Orange.

[He peers at the critter carrier and espies the black cat that peers back at him. Black does not equal orange, but whatever.]

What brought on the sudden urge to get a pet?

It was... a memory, I suppose. I am not certain I could explain it in a fashion most people here would understand, though...

I had a shikigami. I... suppose the closest translation would be a "servant," of sorts. I feel the relationship was more complicated than that, however. She was a cat herself.

I have wondered... if perhaps she explains this gap I have felt since I arrived.

Excuse me? Do you always introduce yourself in such a rude fashion, or was your mother simply negligent in teaching you the finer points of civilized behavior?

Anyway, it's funny that a half-beast like you would bring up civilized behavior. It's almost dinner time, isn't it? Shouldn't you be scurrying around in a back alley somewhere looking for some rats to chew on?

Half beast? Hah! You think I am a half beast? For your information, I am a kitsune. There are no "halves" about me. And I, for one, should imagine that my beastly ways are still more pleasant and refined than you and your petty insults.

You claim to know a lot for a man who no doubt remembers little from the moment he awoke in this place. How would you know how "my kind" acts anyway?

"Oh, hullo, Ran. What've you got in there?" He blinks curiously at the carrier.

Hello Shen! Her name is Orange! Isn't she lovely? Still quite young, though.

"Orange? Hmmm..." He leans forward and peers into the carrier. Oh hoh, there is a kitten in there or, at least, a kitten's eyes. He hears a mew, as if to corroborate that fact. He smiles.

"She's sweet... what I can see of her. Might I ask why you decided to get a cat?"

He leans closer still and hears another mew. All little Orange can probably see is a pair of eyes.

I... suppose you could say it was an impulse. A memory that triggered a desire. It makes about as much sense as any reason, yes?

"It makes perfect sense to me," he answers, still smiling. Good lord, that's the longest he's ever done that with his face. And it's not an evil smile or a condescending smirk... he actually looks... happy.

If one didn't know any better one might think Shen's just a little bit sweet on her.

He looks up at her, then back at the kitten. Hello in there? He wiggles a feather in the little opening.

*Mew! A little pink tongue licks at the feather. Good thing she's not a biter.*

She's a sweetie, isn't she? I could tell just by looking at her.
