RIGHT! I have no idea why I feel like I need to mention ANY OF THIS CRAP, but I can't take it anymore! Guys! I brush my teeth while I'm in the bath! I always clip my nails too short! It's really freaking stupid but I end up really liking any actresses that show up in my dreams! I WAS FREAKING NUMBER 6 OUT OF 7 ON THE HEROES LIST BEFORE BUNNY SHOWED UP AND BECAME MY PARTNER! There! I said it! I don't even know why because it's not like they were weighing on my head but it's like a big freaking burden's been lifted!

Okay! I'm gonna go drink myself into an alcoholic stupor now! BYE.

...There's a ranking system too? You'd think the guys would just be happy that you're saving their asses... So why the popularity contest in the first place?

To drum up public interest, apparently. Get a competition going, and suddenly everybody wants to watch heroes and root for their favorites. It's brilliant in a sick sorta way.

It is, when you put it that way. Good intentions aside, it still depends upon an endless stream of atrocities to stop. I'd rather see 'em not happen in the first place.

[And then he realizes something.]

So... Bunny was your partner BEFORE you came here to Sirocco?

Not by CHOICE, if you gotta know. Apollon Media bought the company I was working for and decided having two guys with the same power working together would make great publicity.

The whole "buddy cop" thing, yeah, I get you.

Well SURE if you wanna make it sound like some cliche movie.

Hey, they wouldn't use it if it didn't work. Plus there's a reason cops partner up in real life; if one falls, the other's got his back. So there's probably more to their reasoning than just public appeal.

You implying that they don't care if you guys make it though the fights they put you in?

Oh, I'm sure they do. Just, well, bear in mind we're also employees. Drop too low in the ratings and you might as well start job hunting.

You know, this is far from what I'd figured being a superhero would be like.

It's kind of a necessary evil. We gotta make money, and the publicity means that people can think more positively about stuff like being a NEXT. Used to be that being a guy with powers meant a lot of folks really didn't like you. Then they started televising all this hero stuff, and all the dramatics, and suddenly NEXTs were cool. It's not ideal, but it works.

[He nods.]

...You're right. Heh, I can easily see that happening now. I suppose it applies some kind of accountability as well. When people get a lot of power--I don't actually mean you or Bunny in this--but when they get power they can tend to get a little crazy with it if they don't have something to answer to.

*He frowns.*

Huh. I'm gettin' kinda deja vu about that for some reason. Can't really remember why, though. Maybe it's one of those things I forgot?

[He blinks.] Wh, really? Well... I guess it can't be very much else. You got anything definite or is it just one of those stupid little context-less snippets that drive a guy crazy when he's trying to sleep?
