How: ...Walking, running, skipping, or log-rolling are all acceptable.
Why: Because I want to.

As Palom had promised, the farm indeed boasted more wholesome family fun activities than you could shake an apple at.  While the main purpose of the day trip, ostensibly, was to finish up harvesting the fruit, the opportunity to explore the farm and its rural surroundings was enticing as well.  By mid-afternoon, Farmer Carol was fully satisfied with the hard work of the volunteers and announced that they were free to do as they pleased.

CORN MAZE

[To the east of the apple orchards, about 10 minutes' walk away, an entire acre of land is dedicated to a corn maze. Whether or not there were enough people in Sirocco willing to pay for this type of entertainment to justify the expense of plowing such intricate designs is beside the point. There are 10 'watchtowers' scattered throughout the maze. Who will reach the exit first?]

I told you when we began that you should have let me take the lead, but no, you had to insist otherwise. Now look at us. Lost. In the middle of a field of corn. Do you know that we could very well die out here due to your stubborn pride, Shirou?

HAY RIDE

[A hay wagon rolls around the entrance of the farms every 15 minutes, dropping off its current load and picking up new passengers. The ride goes through the entire farm, with vast expanses of orchards and crops, pastures and paddocks. Horses, sheep, and cattle can be seen behind fences. The ride is extremely bumpy, the hay is extremely itchy, and the passengers are probably too busy jostling for the best spot at the front of the cart to actually see anything.]

PUMPKIN CARVING

[An assortment of pumpkins, squash, and other gourds are available for a nominal price in the big barn; a small throng is sprawled across the interior frowning as they delicately paint and carve faces into their purchases. Make a grotesque monstrosity or paint a pretty picture. Then force your neighbor to take it home and display it.]

[Hei seems to have a knack for this pumpkin carving business! Unfortunately that's gotten the attention of the local children, some of whom have crowded around asking him to carve their designs. Hei is taking this with surprising patience and begins to carve the pumpkins with efficiency and somewhat wavering dexterity.

You want him to do your pumpkin? Well get in line. Or casually observe the scene to offer support, snark or whatever seems fitting.]

PETTING ZOO

[Baby sheep, calves, pigs, and goats are the most adorable things ever. This is quantifiable truth. They are also somewhat on the smelly side. ...And some of them spit. Way in the back is a paddock where a baby foal awkwardly canters around its mother. The most adorable of all.]

BONFIRE

[As the sun is going down, a massive fire roars to life in a small clearing surrounded by a copse of trees to the rear of the barn. Marshmallows, chocolates, and graham crackers are passed out. For those more sensitive to cold weather and for those looking for an excuse to initiate a romantic tryst, large blankets are available as well. Children venture as closely as they dare with sticks in hand, then wave them about to trace fiery patterns through the air.]

[After Palom has exhausted himself with his various antics throughout the day, he'll seat himself atop a log and curl up beside the bonfire, just watching the sparks fly. The flames reflect in his eyes as he watches quietly. There's a strange solemnity to the hyperactive young boy, an odd sort of peace.

He was special.

He'd boasted and bragged, but he hadn't known it was true until today. Somehow, that made this whole terrible situation all worthwhile. He was a black mage, and he was going to work his tail off to be the greatest black mage the world had ever seen. Palom dreamily gazes into the fire before he lets out a soft yawn.]
